Rapper Overdose: Chris Kelly Of Kriss Kross Died From Mixture Of Substances

Rap star Chris Kelly of the 1990s duo Kris Kross died of a drug overdose, a Georgia medical examiner has formally ruled.

Kelly, 34, was pronounced dead on May 1st after his body was found unresponsive and sprawled across a couch in his Atlanta home. A toxicology report has since shown Kelly had a mixture of drugs in his system at the time of his death, but a medical examiner’s spokesperson told the Los Angeles Times she did not know which drugs it was that killed him.

Kelly’s mother previously told investigators her son extensively used both heroin and cocaine the night before he died and had a long history of substance abuse and alcohol problems.

Along with Chris Smith, Kelly formed half of the Atlanta rap duo that produced such classic hits as 1992’s “Jump.” Though the duo never again reached the level success they did from that hit, they were invited to take part in a So Def Records anniversary show earlier this year honoring Jermaine Dupri, the label owner who signed them and shepherded most of their early careers.

The Times reported that at his memorial services, Kelly’s uncle, Lamar Williams, told mourners his nephew had been plotting a comeback.
