New York Knicks power forward Amar'e Stoudemire may have had a rough season on the court, and could be losing his starting spot in the Knicks' lineup for good, but his personal life is in good shape, after marrying the mother of his four children Saturday.
Amar'e and Alexis Welch married in Miami Saturday, and the celebration was stunning according to one source who spoke to Us Weekly. "This is fairy tale amazing down to every last detail."
Stoudemire's teammates Carmelo Anthony and Tyson Chandler were in attendance for the ceremony, and the couple's children were part of the wedding party. Stoudemire met his wife in 2002 while he was a member of the Phoenix Suns, dominating the NBA in pick and rolls with then-point guard Steve Nash. The couple was technically married in the summer of 2012 in Paris, but this is the first time they've celebrated it with friends and families.
On the court, Stoudemire's outlook is less rosy. His knees have become problematic, and various injuries limited his minutes and workload. He averaged just 23.5 minutes per game this past season, the lowest of his career. In those minutes he averaged 14.2 points per game, his lowest since 2005-2006 when he played in just three games.
His per 36 minutes numbers indicate he can still be an effective scorer, but whether his body is capable of handling starter's minutes is questionable. Also, his lack of defense has made him a liability at times. Additionally, he requires space to operate offensively that he doesn't have when Chandler is in the game.
His role seems to be that of a reserve now that the Knicks are close to acquiring stretch power forward Andrea Bargnani from the Toronto Raptors in exchange for Marcus Camby, Steve Novak and a 2016 first-round pick.
