San Francisco 49ers linebacker Patrick Willis shocked the sports world this week when he unexpectedly announced his retirement from pro football at the young age of 30.

Willis had made seven Pro Bowls in his eight-year career, and he was a five-time All-Pro. He will go down as one of the greatest linebackers of the 21st century, and is a surefire candidate for Canton.

During a farewell press conference on Tuesday, Willis told reporters that he came to this decision due to a desire to maintain his health in his post-playing days.

“Honestly, I pay attention to guys when they’re finished playing, walking around like they’ve got no hips and they can’t play with their kids. They can barely walk,” Willis said.
