Richard Sherman and girlfriend Ashley Moss' first child didn't come during Super Bowl XLIX (as some predicted), but it's still due any day now.

Richard Sherman, Seahawks Teammates React To Heartbreaking Final Play Call

The Seattle Seahawks cornerback is no doubt reeling from his team's devastating 28-24 loss to the New England Patriots, but as far as pick-me-ups go, becoming a new dad is at the top of that list.

Here are five reasons Richard Sherman should make an excellent dad.

1. He's a model of hard work and dedication
Cornerback is one of the hardest positions to master in all of football, and Sherman is arguably the best to play it. You don't reach a level of craft that high without a tremendous amount of elbow grease.

2. He values education
Sometime athletes treat college merely as a vehicle to get to the pros and disregard the benefits the institution can offer them in and of itself. That is an observation, not a criticism -- sometimes economic circumstances dictate a player's need to forego a four-year degree in favor of the guaranteed millions available after they're drafted. Regardless, Sherman himself has spoken frequently about how much he appreciated both his primary education and his years at Stanford. Presumably he'll instill the same thirst for knowledge and scholarship in his own son.

3. He also won't baby his son
Richard Sherman grew up in Compton and escaped relatively meager circumstances to become an NFL star. Because of this, his son will never have to worry about money from the day he enters the world. But Sherman's not going to let his son be complacent in his blessed circumstances, either. He wrote in MMQB last week that "my son will understand that he’s in control of his own destiny."
