Former Atlanta Hawks star Mookie Blaylock is due in bond court today after turning himself in on second-degree vehicular homicide charges.
According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Blaylock surrendered to local police late Monday in connection with the May crash that killed a local woman. At the time of the accident, a warrant was already out for Blaylock stemming from a March DUI charge in which he failed to make a scheduled court appearance in nearby Spalding County.
Using a walker, Blaylock, who initially was put on life support following the crash and had only recently been released from the hospital, limped into the Jonesboro Police Department late Monday where he turned himself in.
“He had a blackout and that’s what caused it,” Blaylock’s attorney Don Samuel told The Journal-Constitution. “Whether it be from his NBA career or something else, we’re trying to get to the bottom of it,” the high-profile attorney said of his new client’s condition.
Considered a defensive specialist and skilled floor leader, Blaylock played 13 NBA seasons for three different teams, including Atlanta, over which time he also worked his way into becoming one of the league’s most reliable three-point shooters.
A University of Oklahoma grad, in 1988 he and fellow star Stacey King led the Sooners all the way to the NCAA title game.
