Sergio Garcia now says he will meet with Tiger Woods face to face prior to the start of the June 13 U.S. Open to apologize for the “fried chicken” comment he made about the world’s top golfer.

According to The New York Post, Garcia plans to arrive in the United States several days before the tournament at Merion commences, hopefully giving him time to make amends with Woods.

“I’ve talked with Tiger’s manager and asked him if he wanted us to call Tiger,” Garcia told the media while playing at last week’s BMW PGA Championship near London. “Obviously, if he gives us the number… or we’ll wait for Merion and do it face to face. They said they would rather do it there. So, you know, there’s nothing else we can do, so we’ll wait until we get there and we’ll talk.’’

Garcia landed in hot water after making jokes many perceived to be racist when a reporter asked him about his and Woods long frosty relationship. When asked if he would be dining with Woods during The Open, Garcia made his remarks about “having fried chicken for him” every night.

Days before the day had again exchanged verbal jabs while competing for The Players Championship, eventually won by Woods. Garcia finished in a tie for 19th last weekend, five shots behind the winner, 20-year-old Matteo Manassero of Italy.

“It’s been a long week and, well, I wasn’t really on my best game today,’’ Garcia told The Post. “And there have been a lot of emotions going on, and today I kind of felt it a little bit.”
