The Washington Redskins struggled all year and finished the season with a 4-12 record, but the team's performance on the field often took a backseat to the drama surrounding the head coach and his quarterback. Numerous times throughout the year, head coach Jay Gruden made headlines by bashing Robert Griffin III in the media.

Announcers Avoid Using Washington's Team Nickname

Gruden repeatedly criticized Griffin all season long, saying that he did not think that Griffin could lead any offense, that he thought Colt McCoy was the best quarterback on the roster, that he hoped the team could get an early lead so that Griffin did not have to drop back and read defenses, and more.

According to ESPN, the comments became something of a problem within the locker room.

"I sat down and explained some things," Gruden said when asked about addressing his comments with Griffin. "It came out today, I said this or that and that's not what I meant. The big thing was the time where I challenged his fundamentals and didn't like him and all that stuff and there was an issue at a team meeting where something had to be said and unfortunately all hell broke loose."

Gruden continued, "The one thing he's got to understand is that he's the quarterback and I'm the coach and we won't always agree in what I do as far as taking him out of games, but he has to understand I have his best interest and the team's best interests at heart. That's it."
