The Atlanta Falcons and Carolina Panthers will meet to decide which team will win the NFC South on Sunday. Many in the media have already made their share of jokes about how bad the division is and how no team truly deserves to win it.

By now, everyone has heard the arguments about how the Philadelphia Eagles should not have to sit at home while a seven-win team makes the playoffs, or how it is unfair that a seven-win Panthers or Falcons team will host a team with at least 11 wins in the Divisional Round of the playoffs. Side note: it is also possible that the winner of the division will finish with only six wins if the Falcons and Panthers tie.

Many are also calling the division the worst in NFL history. But is it? According to FiveThirtyEight, it is very close, and anyone who wants to make the argument is certainly not totally wrong. They measured the winning percentage of the teams in the division against non-division opponents and found that it is indeed one of the worst ever.

However, the worst division of all time is still the 2008 NFC West, which had just a .250 winning percentage against other teams in the division. This year's NFC South comes in just ahead of that mark, posting a .263 winning percentage. They would have tied for the worst percentage ever had Carolina not come from behind to defeat Cleveland last Sunday.

Of course, everyone also remembers that the 2008 NFC West was won by the 7-9 Seattle Seahawks and that they went on to win their first-round playoff game against the New Orleans Saints, so it would seem that not all hope is lost for whichever team wins on Sunday.
