Mississippi State was one of the best stories in college football last season. Now they officially can claim to have had the best coach, too.

The Best and the Worst of the College Gridiron Season

The Maxwell Football Club awarded the Bulldogs' Dan Mullen the George Munger Award on Monday, which is the top honor for a college football coach annually. Mullen led MSU to their best season in the program's 119-year history. The Bulldogs spent multiple weeks as the nation's no. 1 team, and are headed to the Orange Bowl to face Georgia Tech.

“The team’s 10-2 record is a great testament to the hard work of Coach and his staff, and also to the dedication shown by the student-athletes involved in the football program at Mississippi State University,” said Maxwell Executive Director Mark Wolpert, via NBC Sports.

Wolverines Looking at Dan Mullen?

Dan Mullen's stellar season has made him a hot coaching commodity this off-season. He had a brief flirtation with the University of Florida, and has been rumored to be in contention for the Michigan Wolverines' position as well.

Mullen has claimed that Michigan has not contacted him, and has reiterated on numerous occasions that his hope is to stay in Starksville. Mississippi State is expected to offer Mullen a raise and extension in order to make that happen.
