Johnny Manziel Starting Update: Johnny Football Punished For Going to a Cavaliers Game? [VIDEO]

Browns head coach Mike Pettine stuck with quarterback Brian Hoyer on Sunday, rather than going to the rookie Johnny Manziel. Hoyer struggled throughout the day, completing just 14 of 31 passes for 140 yards, to go with two picks. The Browns lost to the Colts at home 25-24.

Many were wondering why Pettine decided to start Hoyer despite giving Manziel a look the Sunday before. On Sunday's Fox pregame show, reporter Jay Glazer relayed an anecdote from the Browns camp that illuminated Pettine's thought process.

Ten Hot Photographs of Johnny Football's Main Squeeze

“Mike Pettine went to veterans, went to coaches this week, and there was resounding support for Brian Hoyer." Glazer said, in remarks captured by PFT. "You gotta remember, these coaches, these players, they see these guys on a day-to-day basis. Now Johnny Manziel, during practice sometimes, he’ll make some throws and make everybody go, ‘Wow, I can’t believe he did that!’ And then he’ll make some plays to get everybody to think, ‘Wow, I can’t believe he did that.’

“Here is what, perhaps, epitomizes this decision better than anything else. Johnny Manziel was not told that he is not the starting quarterback until Wednesday morning. On Tuesday evening he was . . . at the Cleveland Cavaliers game, sitting court side, and it made people inside that organization, they wanted to see how he would handle potentially starting. And there he is, instead of, if you’re getting your first ever NFL start, they would hope that you’re either gonna be at the complex or home and just getting ready for the Indianapolis Colts. He wasn’t, he was with the Cavs.”

The idea of the Browns penalizing Manziel's starting chances over attending a basketball game is a little eyebrow-raising, and was met with incredulity across the media. "For Manziel to be criticized for watching a basketball game on his night off is absurd," said MMQB writer Peter King. PFT's Mike Florio also said such action was "unfair."
