Broncos running back Montee Ball is just about ready to return from a groin injury, but even he believes that he will not be the starter when he able to come back to the field.
Ball spoke about his improved health and his status in the Bronco backfield. Ball did not sugar coat it and said that Ronnie Hillman should remain the starter in Denver due to his production since his injury.
“He should [be the starter]. He definitely should," Ball said Wednesday. “The run game has been a lot better since he’s been in there. So … I’m not going to sit here and lie to myself. So when I come back, I’m going to contribute as much as possible and try to get that spot back.”
Ball has rushed for 172 yards on 55 carries through four starts this season and has only scored one touchdown in that time. Hillman on the other hand has rushed for 365 yards and three touchdowns in his six starts this season. Hillman has been the more productive back so far this season and the addition of Ball should only improve his stock.
Ball will likely still see a healthy amount of carries, but Hillman will get the majority until Ball proves he can carry the load more effectively. The two-headed attack of Ball and Hillman should benefit both players in the long run.
According to Fantasy Pros consensus rankings, Hillman is the No. 9 ranked running back for fantasy football for Week 10 as opposed to Ball being No. 51. For the rest of the season, Hillman is the No. 11 ranked running back and Ball is the No. 39 overall.
