The Houston Texans have decided to make a change at quarterback and Ryan Mallett has been named the team’s new starter for the foreseeable future.

Texans coach Bill O’Brien made the announcement Wednesday and said the decision isn't a short term one. He stated that Mallett deserves ‘his shot’ and he will get every chance to show off his skill set before the team decides what it wants to do heading into 2015.

“This might be the thing that helps our team,” O’Brien said at NRG Stadium. “I might be wrong.”

“We are not asking him to go out there and be Tom Brady,” O’Brien said. We’re asking him to be Ryan Mallett.”

Mallett replaces Ryan Fitzpatrick who had thrown for 1,980 yards with 11 touchdowns and eight interceptions in his eight starts this season. Mallett has been in the NFL since 2011 and has not registered a start in his time with the New England Patriots.

Philadelphia Eagles Moving Past Nick Foles at Quarterback?

Mallett was seen as a top-tier prospect at Arkansas, but off the field issues hindered his draft stock to a point that he dropped to the third round. The Patriots took him with the 74th overall pick and traded him to the Texans earlier this year.

Mallett should be monitored in two-quarterback fantasy leagues, but until he shows what he can do with the various weapons he has at his disposal, he should only be monitored. The Texans are on a bye week this weekend and if you are desperate for Week 11, you could take a shot at the former Arkansas star.
