The Oakland Raiders have shown interest in bringing back head coach Jon Gruden and Derek Carr might be the key to luring the coach out of the Monday Night Football booth.

According to NBC Sports, Raiders owner Mark Davis has been thinking about luring Gruden back to Oakland for some time now. According to the report, Davis lobbied with general manager Reggie McKenzie to select Carr at No. 5 overall in the 2014 NFL draft because Gruden favored the Fresno State product to the other quarterbacks in the class.

“Davis believes Carr’s presence will help lure Gruden back to town. For any coach with options (and it’s still not clear how many options Gruden really has had or will have), the quarterback position becomes nearly as important as the salary. Davis thinks that Gruden’s favorite quarterback in the 2014 class was Carr. Which could help Gruden choose to return to the Black Hole at a time when the roster otherwise contains plenty of red flags.”

Albert Breer of NFL.com has a similar opinion on Gruden and Carr.

The Raiders are in rough shape after firing head coach Dennis Allen, but Gruden could make these problems go away. Gruden is as good a coach as there is on the open market and he has a great history with the organization.

The Raiders ended up selecting Carr in the second round of the draft and now that they fired Allen, they can go all-in on Jon Gruden.
