The Oakland Raiders just fired head coach Dennis Allen, but that didn’t stop team owner Mark Davis from throwing out the first potential name to fill the role.
Davis and general manager Reggie McKenzie took questions while introducing interim head coach Tony Sparano and he was asked about a potential reunion with Jon Gruden next season.
"I don't know," Davis said. "He may reach out to me, I may reach out to him -- I may reach out to anybody. I'm not going to talk about future coaches.”
Davis also didn't rule out that the Raiders next head coach was already on staff while pointing at Sparano. NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Monday that the Raiders were looking to make a splash with their next head coach signing and Gruden would certainly fit the bill.
According to Albert Breer, the team in question would need a franchise-caliber quarterback to lure Gruden out of the ESPN's Monday Night Football booth and back to the sideline. The Raiders currently have rookie Derek Carr as their quarterback, whom Gruden has said he loves when hosting the Fresno State alumni on ESPN.
NFL.com was first with the report, but also said that it is unlikely that Gruden will return to the Raiders at this point. Gruden coached the Raiders from 1998 to 2001.
The Raiders are currently 0-4 on this young season and head into their bye week after getting throttled by the Miami Dolphins in London.
