Oakland Raiders’ coach Dennis Allen remains employed with the team despite a series of tweets Sunday night that reported that he had been fired.

Terry Collins of The Associated Press tweeted that the Raiders had fired Allen and would make a formal announcement on Tuesday. Multiple news outlets, including ESPN’s Adam Schefter, took the story and ran with it, only to have Collins delete the tweet and backtrack the story.

NBC Sports covered the debacle from the beginning:

“Terry Collins, who identifies himself on Twitter as “Veteran award-winning journalist,” initially tweeted that Allen is already fired and that an announcement could come as soon as Tuesday. Collins does not have a history of breaking news in the NFL, and no other reporter had confirmed the report, so there were immediately questions about it. Soon Collins had deleted his tweet, and later Collins tweeted an apology saying that what he had previously called a report from sources were just unconfirmed 'rumors.'“

The Raiders are 0-4 after being completely dismantled 38-14 by the Miami Dolphins in a game where it looked like the Raiders quit at times. Oakland lost rookie quarterback Derek Carr to an ankle and knee injury in the third quarter and Matt McGloin took over in relief of the second-round pick.

The Raiders will have their bye week for Week 5 and return to action against their AFC West rival San Diego Chargers on October 12.
