Retiring shortstop Derek Jeter will not be in the Yankees starting lineup Friday night to face the Red Sox in Boston.

The decision comes one day after Jeter appeared in his final game at Yankee Stadium. Manager Joe Girardi announced the news Friday afternoon.

"I think he's going to take a day off," Girardi said.

It's possible Jeter could appear in the game as a pinch-hitter, but Girardi does expect that to happen. There have been reports that Jeter will not play shortstop in any of the final three games at Fenway Park. However, he is expected to be in the Yankees lineup at some point in the series as a designated hitter.

"I think Jeet will go back out there," Girardi said. "If he didn't I wouldn't have a problem with it. I would completely understand it.

"I'm not so sure what I would do if I were him in that situation. But he loves to compete, but I just have a feeling he'll go back out."

Jeter closed out his professional career at Yankee Stadium on Thursday night with two hits and three RBIs in leading the Yanks to a 6-5 victory over the Baltimore Orioles.
