The Minnesota Vikings announced Wednesday that quarterback Matt Cassel will miss the rest of the 2014 season and rookie Teddy Bridgewater will be the starter in going forward.
The Vikings made it official Wednesday by placing Cassel on season-ending injured reserve after it was revealed the quarterback had several broken bone sin his left foot. Bridgewater is the team’s backup quarterback and will be vaulted into the starting position regardless if he is “ready” or not.
Bridgewater played in relief of Cassel in the team’s 20-9 loss to the Saints and played well in limited action. The rookie completed 12 of 20 passes for 150 yards and running six times for 27 yards in his debut. Bridgewater will have a solid group of weapons in the form of receivers Greg Jennings and Cordarrelle Patterson, but will be without running back Adrian Peterson (suspension) and tight end Kyle Rudolph (sports hernia).
Bridgewater will get his shot to impress the Vikings for the rest of the season in light of Cassel’s season ending prematurely. Bridgewater joins Blake Bortles in Jacksonville and Derek Carr in Oakland as rookies to earn the starting spot for their respective teams.
The Vikings play host to the Atlanta Falcons for Week 4 and will use Christian Ponder as Bridgewater’s backup.
