Dallas cornerback Morris Claiborne skipped out on Cowboys practice and stormed out of the team’s training facility Tuesday after being informed that he was no longer in the starting lineup.
The Cowboys told Claiborne that newly reinstated Orlando Scandrick was replacing him in the starting lineup and that he would be uses as the team’s third cornerback. The announcement of Claiborne’s demotion comes days after owner Jerry jones told on 105.3 The Fan that the former LSU standout was not worth the No. 6 overall pick they used to obtain him.
"Is he what we had hoped for at this point when we drafted him with the sixth overall pick, giving up the [second-round] pick to go up to the sixth pick to get him? No," Jones said. "But he's going to be a good player.”
Scandrick took Claiborne’s starting position last season and likely would have been named the starter to begin the season if he wasn’t suspended for violating the league's substance-abuse policy. The Cowboys could fine Claiborne for missing the practice or for conduct detrimental to the team, but there has been no word from the Cowboys concerning the situation.
Cowboy coach Jason Garrett did not back Claiborne as the starter on Monday and said the team will find the best players to play on Sundays.
"We'll evaluate them and see who can play best," Garrett said. "We'll do that again this week and determine how we play guys all throughout our roster.”
Claiborne has three career interceptions in 24 games as a starter, including one that sealed the Cowboys’ 34-31 victory over the St. Louis Rams on Sunday. Claiborne wasn't at his best against the Rams as he allowed five receptions for 108 yards and a 51-yard touchdown.
