The Minnesota Vikings hit another snag in the road on Sunday when they lost quarterback Matt Cassel to a left foot injury, but Cassel’s injury has paved the way for rookie Teddy Bridgewater to start for the team in Week 4.

Cassel suffered fractures in his foot in the second quarter of the Vikings 20-9 loss to the New Orleans Saints and this allowed Bridgewater to see his first action as a member of Minnesota.

“Cassel injured his foot on a scramble during the Vikings' field-goal drive early in the second quarter. He was carted to the locker room for X-rays after trainer Eric Sugarman examined his foot. It was later confirmed by ESPN.com that Cassel suffered several fractured bones in the foot.”

The former Louisville Cardinal preformed well in his first action as he completed 12 of 20 passes for 150 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions. Bridgewater also rushed six times for 27 yards.

Cassel is expected to miss some time with the foot injury thus thrusting Bridgewater into the starting position in an already eventful season for the Vikings. Coach Mike Zimmer had said on multiple occasions that Cassel is the team’s starter, Bridgewater was the backup and former first round pick Christian Ponder was the third string.

It looks as if Bridgewater will get his shot with the Vikings while Cassel heals up and will probably be the team’s starter even when Cassel returns. Bridgewater joins Blake Bortles in Jacksonville and Derek Carr in Oakland as rookies to earn the start for their respective teams.

The Vikings play host to the Atlanta Falcons for Week 4.
