The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will already be without quarterback Josh McCown due to a thumb injury, but now offensive coordinator Jeff Tedford will take a leave of absence due to his own health issues.

The Tampa Bay Times reports that the 52-year-old Tedford asked for and was granted an indefinite leave of absence from the team as he tends to medical issues he is having. Tedford did not attend the Buccaneers' 56-14 road loss Thursday to the Atlanta Falcons and had previously had a coronary angioplasty to have two stents placed in an artery near his heart in August.

According to the Times, Tedford was expected to rejoin the team Monday, but then he asked coach Lovie Smith for the leave of absence.

“Tedford was expected to resume his duties this week and was in the office over the weekend. But he was not at practice Monday. Less than a day later, Tedford decided to take a medical leave.”

Buccaneers quarterbacks coach Marcus Arroyo, who served under Tedford at California, will absorb offensive coordinator responsibilities according to coach Smith.

The Buccaneers are ranked 30th in the NFL in total offense and average only 271 yards of offense per game. Tampa Bay has only scored 45 points in their three games and have given up 95 to opposing teams.

Tedford and McCown had developed a strong bond over the Buccaneers' offseason but now the team finds itself without both of their offensive cornerstones.

Tampa Bay travels to Pittsburgh to play the 2-1 Steelers on Sunday and will start Mike Glennon at quarterback in McCown's place.
