Washington Redskins coach Jay Gruden shed some light on when quarterback Robert Griffin III could return to action and it is sooner than initially thought.
Gruden revealed that Griffin will be in a cast for the next 10 days and then will undergo four to six weeks of rehabilitation on his dislocated left ankle. Griffin will be available to return after the rehabilitation process within the next eight weeks.
Gruden said the team is monitoring Griffin’s rehab closely, but the Redskins will have to move forward with Kirk Cousins at the helm.
"Right now, we're going to prepare with Kirk Cousins as our starter and Robert's going to rehab, and all decisions after that will come after that," Gruden said. "But right now, we're going to go try to do the best we can and get Kirk ready to go and beat Philadelphia.”
Griffin was thought to be lost for the season after the injury, but the lack of a fracture in the ankle has given the quarterback a chance to return this season. Griffin has started in 31 games for the Redskins since being drafted out of Baylor and has left four games due to injury over that time.
Cousins stepped in for Griffin last week against the Jacksonville Jaguars and completed 22 of 33 passes for 250 yards and two touchdowns. The 1-1 Redskins take on the 2-0 Eagles in Philadelphia this weekend.
