Texas Longhorns quarterback David Ash has decided to walk away from football after suffering from concussion-related symptoms for the last year.

Coach Charlie Strong made the announcement after Longhorns practice on Wednesday and said that the team will keep Ash on board despite his choice to leave the game.

"We just decided, because of his health -- that's the No. 1 concern for all of us -- that he's no longer going to play football," Strong said. "But he is going to be part of the team, because I told him I wanted him around the team and that's what he deserves.”

Ash suffered a concussion last September against BYU and has only appeared in two games since then, including the Longhorns lone win of 2014 in Week 1 against North Texas. Ash never fully recovered from the injury and made the decision to step away from football before his condition worsened.

Strong said that the decision to step away was Ash’s, but that the team could simply not allow him to play due to his history of head-related injuries.

"It was a very tough call for him," Strong said. "He's very emotional. He's done a lot for this program, been a major part of this university.”

Sophomore Tyrone Swoopes will be the Longhorns quarterback going forward and has started the last two games for Texas this season. Ash finishes his Texas career with 4,728 passing yards and 36 total touchdowns in 29 games with the university.

The 1-2 Longhorns travel to Kansas to take on the Jayhawks as they kickoff their Big 12 schedule. In the next four weeks the Longhorns will host No. 7 Baylor and No. 4 Oklahoma and travel to No. 20 Kansas State.
