The Dallas Cowboys have signed defensive end Michael Sam to their practice squad and answered questions about Josh Brent on Wednesday. Cowboys coach Jason Garrett addressed the teams’ actions at his weekly news conference from the team facility.
Garrett listed off the roster moves the team made in the recent days and among them were the signing of Michael Sam and the return of Josh Brent. Garrett downplayed the roster moves and told the media to understand that he will not take much time to discuss a practice squad player.
Gronk's Status Not Set in Stone?
Brent is returning to the team after serving jail time for intoxicated manslaughter that killed best friend and teammate Jerry Brown in December 2012. Brent has been suspended 10 games by the NFL for his actions and will be subject to a lifetime ban of he is involved in another incident involving alcohol.
Sam joins the team after being cut by the St. Louis Rams due to his inability to play outside linebacker or special teams. Sam will remain on the Cowboys practice squad for the time being, but with their defensive line widely seen as the team's major weakness and their lack of depth, he could see some time on the 53-man roster at some point.
Sam was co-SEC defensive player of the year last season for the Missouri Tigers and was drafted in the seventh round by the Rams in the 2014 draft. Sam is the first openly gay NFL player to be drafted into the league and is looking to become the first to ever appear in a NFL regular season game.
Sam will wear No. 46 for the Cowboys and Brent plans to appeal his 10 game suspension.
