While the WWE wasn't supportive of Alberto Del Rio's decision to allegedly strike an employee backstage over an alleged racist comment, John Cena and other top WWE Superstars reportedly have been very supportive of Del Rio and hope he'll eventually return to the WWE.
Backstage Update On Rey Mysterio's Contract Dispute With WWE
Wrestlingheadlines.com reports that several top stars, including Cena, Randy Orton and The Big Show, told Del Rio that they would push for him to be re-hired by the WWE because most of the locker room is sympathetic to the situation that led to his release, but Del Rio has made it clear that he doesn't want to return.
Del Rio is expected to do some media appearances in the United States soon to address the events that happened and what led to his departure from the organization.
Del Rio has a one-year no-compete clause in the United States after being fired from the WWE, but he is planning on fighting it and he and his representatives have apparently reached out to Indy bookers about possible autograph signings and matches in the U.S. going forward.
Del Rio and his representation reportedly believe that the WWE not allowing him to sign autographs or compete for other pro wrestling or MMA promotions while not paying him would not hold up in court. His pricing demands for bookings are said to be very high, according to reports.
According to the reports from the incident, Del Rio slapped Cody Barbierri, who works for the WWE's social media department, after he made a comment that it was Del Rio's job to clean off his plate at catering due to his Hispanic background.
Del Rio wasn't there when the comments were made, but after he heard about it, he confronted Barbierri about them and demanded an apology. When Barbierri didn't oblige, Del Rio reportedly slapped him very hard.
According to reports, Vince McMahon was initially sympathetic toward Del Rio for the incident and was just going to suspend him, but the WWE eventually changed its mind and Del Rio was fired after a phone call from Triple H.
Del Rio hasn't gone public with the specifics of what happened for legal reasons, but he has vowed he will get into it eventually. He has also been upset that Barbierri wasn't fired for his role in the incident and he painted the WWE as racist in a recent interview in Mexico.
Triple H reportedly told Del Rio that the company would bring him back in six months once the heat died down, but Del Rio said he wasn't interested in returning. It had long been reported that Del Rio was looking to leave the WWE for Mexico anyway.
Del Rio appeared at AAA's TripleMania XXII event that ran on the same night as WWE SummerSlam this past Sunday.
Del Rio was very upset over how the WWE handled his departure, and it doesn't appear as though he'll be returning to the company any time soon.
