The Los Angeles Lakers were heavily linked to a Walker Kessler trade rumor in January. The Utah Jazz center, at that time, did not play six games in a row due to a hip injury.
Recently, the Lakers and New York Knicks reportedly pursued Kessler hard prior to the trade deadline, but the Jazz were adamant about retaining him. NBA insider Marc Stein reports that both teams made serious attempts at signing the star big man, but Utah did not consider trading him midseason.
Luka Doncic Trade May Have Impacted Lakers' Pursuit
According to Stein, the two teams badly wanted to get Kessler as part of their pre-trade deadline strategy. However, the Jazz made it clear that it wouldn't happen anytime soon.
"League sources indicate that the Knicks were as much a part of the Lakers in their pre-trade deadline efforts to get Utah to entertain serious Walker Kessler trade talks as anyone," he said. "No luck, however. The Jazz indicated that they had no interest in playing in-season Kessler pitches."
In spite of intense interest, Utah made it clear that they had no plans on trading Kessler for the remainder of the season. The 7-foot defensive stalwart has been an integral part of the Jazz and were reluctant to trade him, particularly during the absence of the playoffs.
One of the key reasons Utah probably made the move was the trade that saw Luka Doncic shipped to the Lakers. With Utah possessing L.A.'s 2027 first-round pick, they have nothing to gain from making the Lakers' roster better, which would devalue that pick.
For the Knicks, their pursuit of Kessler makes one wonder what they were prepared to give. Following the trade of a major package for Mikal Bridges, their other trade assets might not have been sufficient to attract the Jazz.

Would the Jazz Reconsider Trading Kessler During the Offseason?
One of the most important phrases in Stein's report is "in-season." Utah's reluctance to negotiate during the season doesn't necessarily make Kessler untradeable, according to SLC Dunk. The Jazz might be more willing to listen in the offseason when they re-evaluate their roster and draft choices.
With multiple teams expressing interest, including the Knicks and Lakers, Kessler's name could remain a hot topic in trade rumors. As the offseason approaches, it will be worth monitoring whether Utah reconsiders its stance and listens to offers for its rising defensive star.
In another NBA trade rumor report, LaMelo Ball and Trae Young are reportedly in the trade mill. League executives think that the two young stars could go elsewhere to improve their value.
