The No. 2 Duke Blue Devils are flying high with March Madness nearing the horizon, but everyone wants to see if freshman sensation Cooper Flagg returns. The projected No. 1 overall pick in the NBA Draft has sent fans and analysts into shock after teasing a chance to return to Durham for his sophomore season.
Before he decides where to play next, Coach Mike Krzyzewski has some advice for the young cager.
Flagg's Announcement Hints He Wants to 'Come Back'
Although widely regarded as a generational talent, Flagg showed his affection for Duke and college hoops recently when he said, "I want to come back next year." Although his declaration rocked the world of basketball, few think it will happen based on his skyrocketing draft prospects.
According to Athlon Sports, the 6-foot-8 player has been unstoppable during his freshman year, dominating all of Duke's key statistical lists. He is averaging 19.3 points, 7.6 boards, 4.1 assists, 1.6 steals, and 1.1 blocks, showing he is ready for the next level.

What Coach K Says About Flagg's Situation
Whereas most top prospects jump for the NBA as quickly as possible, the arrival of name, image, and likeness (NIL) contracts has leveled the playing field.
If Duke can assemble a rich NIL deal, it might complicate Flagg's decision. Still, his estimated NBA contract—potentially in the tens of millions would remain exponentially richer than any college contract.
According to 247Sports, former Duke coaching legend Mike Krzyzewski had his say on the matter, urging Flagg to make an intelligent choice for his future.
"There are a lot of factors at play, but in Cooper's case, he should do whatever he feels is best for him," he said. "My thing is just be smart. Be smart for you."
"You only get to do this once, and you're only going to have the opportunity for a certain amount of time," Krzyzewski pointed out. "And, really, you're talking about generational wealth – real generational wealth – if you do it the right way."
Duke Thrives With Flagg
As Duke leads the ACC with a 26-3 record, Flagg has been instrumental in their success. In a recent 100-65 victory over Florida State, he demonstrated his all-around game with 16 points, six rebounds, four assists, and two steals.
With only two games remaining in the regular season, Flagg is still a National Player of the Year candidate on par with Auburn's Johni Broome. If he gets Duke to the NCAA championship game, his place in college hoops history will be secured—no matter if he stays or departs.
Will Flagg Depart or Remain?
Even with his shocking words, the overwhelming view is that Flagg will make the jump to the NBA Draft. The money and professional opportunities are too good to pass up.
But until March Madness passes, there is always the idea of one more season at Duke. Blue Devils fans can only hope for now.
