The San Antonio Spurs sent Ginobili a letter saying that they do want him to play in the World Cup to which Ginobili had no choice but to agree. Ginoblil then tweeted out to his fans in Spanish that he is “so sorry” that he cannot compete in the World Cup and the Argentine Basketball Federation made the decision official soon before.

The time off will give Ginobili time to heal up and the Spurs get a sigh of relief that one of their stars will not be risking injury. Ginobili has played for Argentina since 1998, including the nation's 2004 Olympics where they went through the United States en route to a gold medal.
Ginobili is coming off a season where he scored 12.3 points per game as well as 4.3 assists en route to the Spurs fifth championship in franchise history.
