NFL.com is reporting that former Dallas Cowboys fullback Robert Newhouse died at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., after a battle with heart disease. He was 64 years old.

Newhouse's son, Rodd Newhouse, reported the news, according to NFL.com.

"He had no airs about him at all. Just a genuine, wonderful, really top flight man," said NFL Media's Gil Brandt to NFL.com.

Newhouse ran for 4,784 yards during his 12-year Cowboys career. He had career highs of 930 yards rushing and 275 yards receiving in 1975, two years before the arrival of Tony Dorsett.

Newhouse developed his most well-known reputation as lead blocker for Dorsett. Together, the two helped the Cowboys play in Super Bowls X, XII and XIII, defeating the Denver Broncos 27-10 sandwiched between two defeats to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The fullback threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to Golden Richards to help beat the Broncos.

Newhouse was born in Longview, Texas and attended Galilee High School in Hallsville, prior to enrolling at the University of Houston.

The Cougars ranked in the Top 20 in all three seasons in which Newhouse participated. He ran for 1,757 yards as a senior - a record that still stands.

Newhouse was a second-round draft pick by the Cowboys in 1972.

His son, Reggie, played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2004-05. Newhouse also is survived by his wife Nancy and daughters Dawnyel and Shawntel.

Newhouse suffered a stroke in 2010, NFL.com reported.
