The Kansas City Chiefs and quarterback Alex Smith have been in negotiations for a new longterm deal, but progress hasn't been made due to Smith’s view of his value. Smith wants to be paid like an elite quarterback and recently said that he is on the same level as the leagues best.

Smith spoke with the Kansas City Star on Thursday and said he is willing to wait for a new contract, but he has taken not of the deals that other quarterbacks have recently received.

"Certainly when you're talking about comparables and what the marketplace is for a quarterback, certainly you're looking at that," Smith told the paper. "And I feel like my body of work of the last three, four years is right up there with a lot of those guys. No question, when you're trying to put a value on something like that, you look at a lot of stuff.”

The 30-year-old Smith will make $7.5 million this season and is entering the final year of his contract with the Chiefs. Smith is seeking a deal that rivals the deals that Matt Ryan, Jay Cutler, Tony Romo and Matthew Stafford have received that are worth around $17 million to $18 million annually.

Smith has expressed interest in staying with the Chiefs ever since being traded from the San Francisco 49ers before the start of the 2013 season. Smith echoed that message to the Star.

"I'd love to have it done," Smith said. "I love Kansas City, I love the coaching staff, the players. ... But when you're talking about this many years and that type of deal, you want it done right. You want both sides happy, and you want it to be something that is going to last and you can play out. A lot of things go into it.”

The former No. 1 overall pick led the Chiefs from an NFL worst 2-14 in 2012 to a playoff bound 11-5 team that lost in the first round to the Indianapolis Colts.
