Boston Celtics legend Bill Russell was hospitalized Thursday after he was feeling faint while giving a speech in Nevada. Russell is ‘feeling better’ and is expected to return home soon.
The 80-year-old Russell was taken away from the event at the Hyatt Regency resort in Incline Village on a stretcher, but only as a precaution. The Celtics have been updating Russell’s status since the incident and are optimistic he will make a full recovery.
According to the Associate Press, witnesses say Russell was telling a story to the room full of employees when he started to sway at the podium. Russell then fell backwards, but was conscious and responsive to the first responders on the scene.
Russell is considered one of the best players ever to play in the NBA and his 11 NBA Championships goes unrivaled. Russell is a 12-time All-Star and averaged 15.1 points, 22.5 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game in his 13 year career with the Celtics. Russell also spent eight seasons as a coach in the NBA.
UPDATE: Bill Russell collapsed while giving a speech in Lake Tahoe. #Celtics tell me he is doing OK and will likely fly out tonight #wcvb

The idea is not to block every shot. The idea is to make your opponent believe that you might block every shot. - Bill Russell — BullsLegacy (@BullsLegacy) July 18, 2014
