The Los Angeles Lakers have won the Carlos Boozer bidding war with a winning bid of $3.25 million. The Lakers were one of nine teams able to blindly bid on Boozer’s $16.8 million deal and they walk away with the prize.
Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak spoke in a news release about the newest Laker and said it’s a step in the right direction for the franchise.
"We're very pleased to have won the bidding process and to have gained his rights, and look forward to his contributions next season.”
Boozer was amnestied by the Chicago Bulls after they acquired Pau Gasol and European product Nikola Mirotic. The Lakers will pay $3.25 million to Boozer in 2014-15 while the Bulls must pay him the entire $13.6 million he is owed from the contract that was amnestied. The $13.6 million will not count against the salary cap for the Bulls, but it must still be payed to Boozer in full.
Boozer joins free agent Ed Davis as the second power forward the Lakers have added in an attempt to replace Gasol. The Lakers also resigned Jordan Hill to a two-year, $18 million deal earlier in free agency to add competition to the position.
Boozer is coming off one of the worst seasons of his career as he averaged 13.7 points and 8.3 rebounds in 76 games for the Bulls. Many believe Boozer has much more to give to an NBA team, but if the team is going to lean on him they will be very disappointed.
