The Charlotte Hornets haven't had much luck in the draft since the franchise joined the NBA and it’s possible that all the fault lies with Michael Jordan. Indiana’s Noah Vonleh might be Jordan’s latest draft flop and Chicago’s Doug McDermott is making the situation look much worse.
Early in the draft process, the rumor mill swirled about who the Hornets would select with the No. 9 overall pick. All reports had pointed to Charlotte selecting Creighton’s dynamic scorer in McDermott, but instead they picked Vonleh.
It is incredibly too early to tell who the better player will be in the NBA, but if you take Summer League into account, McDermott is making it a no-brainer. Jake O'Donnell of Sports Grid broke down the two players in their first few appearances in Las Vegas.
“Noah Vonleh is averaging 5 points per game, 12 rebounds per game and shooting 0.133% from the floor (just 3-23). Oh, and he’s averaging 6.5 fouls per contest — so that explains the impressive rebounding statistic (he’s just throwing bows in there).
Meanwhile over in Chicago (we, actually still in Vegas), Doug McDermott is averaging 20 ppg, shooting 50% from deep, all while playing three fewer minutes per game.”
If Vonleh doesn't pan out, he is the latest black eye in Jordan’s draft history since becoming the Hornets/Bobcats "Managing Member of Basketball Operations” in 2006. Now the majority owner of the franchise, Jordan should consider taking a step back from the basketball side of the Hornets.
Jordan’s resume since 2006 includes just two seasons above .500 and a 7-59 record in 2011-12. Jordan’s career 249-391 record while with Charlotte is just a sign that the best to ever play the game just might not have what it takes to run a franchise.
