The Houston Rockets were expected to be the big buyers of free agency this offseason, but whiffed on all the major talent. The Rockets plan going forward could be to acquire the Boston Celtics’ Rajon Rondo or the Minnesota Timberwolves’ Kevin Love.
The Rockets have lost Chandler Parsons and traded both Jeremy Lin and Omer Asik to clear space toward a max contract. Now that all the max contract players have found new homes, the Rockets have to regroup and establish a new plan.
ESPN’s Marc Stein reports that the Rockets plan was to sign Chris Bosh and then match the offer sheet on Parsons, but now that Bosh is gone they will look to aquire top talent via trade.
ESPN sources say Rockets promised Bosh they would match on Parsons if he committed and believed they were on brink of commitment from Bosh

So look for Rockets to re-enter trade game for longtime Houston target Rajon Rondo as well as try to work their way into mix for Kevin Love — Marc Stein (@ESPNSteinLine) July 14, 2014
The Rockets would likely be thrilled to acquire either Love or Rondo, but what they can offer in return is the question. The Rockets are strapped for assets after trading a first round pick and Lin to the Los Angeles Lakers and trading Asik to the New Orleans Pelicans.
The Rockets are in “win now” mode and, with the free agency clock about to strike midnight, it will be interesting to see who is on the Rockets’ roster come the 2014-15 season. Desperate times usually call for desperate measures.
