San Francisco 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith will not face charges stemming from his arrest earlier this year where he allegedly made fake bomb threats at Los Angeles International Airport.
ESPN reported the Los Angeles City Attorney's office announced Tuesday after an exhaustive review of the evidence prosecutors had decided not to seek formal misdemeanor charges against Smith. The website added Smith still faces a July 30 court hearing to "address the situation."
A spokesman for the city attorney's office later wrote in an email Smith would be given a chance to offer his account of the April 13 events. The spokesperson added Smith will also be scolded about applicable laws and how best to stay clear of any similar incidents in the future.
The 24-year-old Smith also faces sentencing on July 25 after pleading no-contest to three felony gun charges that could end in jail time. ESPN added the NFL is not expected to discipline Smith over the matter until after it has been legally resolved. The 49ers open training camp on July 24, one day before Smith is due back in court.
