The Yankees are close to acquiring Vernon Wells from the Los Angeles Angels to add to their ailing lineup, sources told ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney. Wells has a no-trade clause, but sources told Olney the 34-year-old outfielder will approve a trade to New York.

Wells still has two years and $42 million remaining on his seven-year, $126 million contract. He originally agreed to the deal with the Toronto Blue Jays before Los Angeles agreed to take on Wells' contract in exchange for catcher Mike Napoli and outfielder Juan Rivera.

Wells saw a decline during the 2012 season, hitting just .230 with 11 home runs, 56 hits, 29 RBIs in just 243 at-bats. Wells is a .273 hitter with 259 home runs, 1695 hits and 908 RBIs in 6218 career at-bats.

The Yankees' lineup took another hit on Sunday when general manager Brian Cashman announced that Yankee captain Derek Jeter will likely start the season on the DL. Jeter joins a list of injured Yankee starters that includes Mark Teixeira, Alex Rodriguez and Curtis Granderson.
