First reports out of Jacksonville Jaguars camp are positive as Blake Bortles continues to impress the coaching staff and the local media. Multiple media outlets in the area believe Bortles is already surpassing expectations in Jacksonville and could push for a week one start.

Bortles has been a student of the game since getting into Jaguars camp and the media has taken notice by anointing him better than Blaine Gabbert when he was a rookie. Bortles has been engaging with the media and courteous in a way that Gabbert never was and we all know how Gabbert turned out for the Jaguars.

According to ESPN’s Mike DiRocco, Bortles has made strides as a player and as a leader by seeking out coaches after practices to improve all areas of his game. Bortles took what he learned in his first practice and, to the coaches delight, applied it the very next day.

Bortles spoke about his learning curve and knows it won’t be all positives as he continues to progress into the NFL.

It’s a process. I’m just trying to work through it. There’s going to be some ups and there’s going to be some downs. Being able to handle it and move on, learn from the mistakes, learn from the guys that have played, learned from everything, and continue to get better [is the goal].

The Jaguars gave us the first surprise of the draft when they selected Bortles with the No. 3 overall pick in May’s NFL draft. Bortles was drafted to be the saving grace in Jacksonville and with the positive reports out of camp, we could be seeing Bortles take the field very soon.

The Jaguars have been adamant in saying that Bortles will not start week one and could be shelved for the entire season as he gets a grasp for the NFL. Veteran quarterback Chad Henne is expected to be the Jaguars quarterback until Bortles is deemed ready.
