The San Diego Chargers and free agent running back Danny Woodhead agreed to a two-year contract on Friday. Woodhead spent the past three seasons as a member of the New England Patriots.

The 5-foot-8, 200-pound Woodhead served as the Patriots' "passing" back, which played a major role in the team's offense as it was often used in spread formations. Woodhead played in 34 percent of the offensive snaps last season, totaling 76 carries for 301 yards and four touchdowns while adding 40 receptions for 446 yards and three touchdowns.

New England signed Woodhead in 2010 after he was cut by the New York Jets during training camp. He emerged as a relaible presence on offense and a cult favorite in New England.

The Patriots have focused on Stevan Ridley and Shane Vereen at the top of the running back depth chart. Vereen is likely to fulfill Woodhead's duties as the passing back next season.

New England has second-year players Brandon Bolden and Jeff Dempts, along with veteran Leon Washington on the depth chart as well.
