The Carolina Panthers announced Friday that they have parted ways with veteran cornerback Chris Gamble in order to fall under the salary cap. Gamble was scheduled to count for $10.9 million against this year's salary cap. With the release, Carolina clears $7.9 million in cap space.

"I appreciate the contributions of Chris during my first two years as head coach and to the organization for many years," Panthers coach Ron Rivera told ESPN. "He always handled things the right way, and we wish him the best."

Gamble has played in 123 career regular-season games with 117 starts and is the franchise's leader with 27 career interceptions, which includes two returned for touchdowns. He holds the record for most starts by a Panthers quarterback in franchise history. Gamble is three days shy of turning 30 years old and missed most of the 2012 season due to a torn labrum in his shoulder.
