The Denver Broncos are asking their pro bowl defensive end Elvis Dumervil to take a pay cut in order to create more salary-cap room for free agency, according to the Associated Press. Dumervil signed a six-year, $61.5 million contract in 2010. He's scheduled to make $12 million in 2013.

Dumervil originally re-signed with Denver after posting a career best season in 2009. However, this was before John Elway took over as the team's executive vice president of football operations.

The team hopes to restructure Dumervil's deal, according to a person familiar with the situation, who spoke to the AP anonymously due to negotiations not being public. The Denver Post first reported about the team's request on Thursday.

Dumervil recorded 11 sacks last season, second amongst Broncos players behind Von Miller. Dumervil led the entire NFL with 17 sacks in 2009. The Broncos will look so free up cap space in order to fill needs at their interior defensive line, cornerback and running back positions.
