After two years of courtroom battles the NFL wants rapper M.I.A. to pay $16.6 million as a result of her action at the Super Bowl halftime show in 2012. Maya Arulpragasam or M.I.A. was the performer who raised the middle finger to the camera during her set and ever since has been in a legal battle over the damages the NFL believes she caused.

NFL's Worst Position Groups Post Free Agency

Here is the act M.I.A. is being asked to answer for. WARNING: Uncensored middle finger

M.I.A. took to Twitter to show the document the NFL sent to her to sign where she would pay a $16.6 million sum for her actions. M.I.A.’s case is that the NFL is asking for too large a sum and that they pick and choose who they pursue by siting previous performances by Prince and Michael Jackson. M.I.A commented on the case and sited the NFL and televisions priorities might not be in the right place.

“Now they’re scapegoating me into figuring out what is the goal post of what’s offensive in America …. Like, is my finger offensive? Or is an underage black girl with her legs wide open more offensive to the family audience? It’s a massive waste of time, a massive waste of money. It’s a massive display of powerful corporation d–k shaking. They want me on my knees, to say sorry so they can slap me on my wrist, and basically say it’s okay for me to promote being sexually exploited as a female, but then to display female empowerment through being punk rock.

NFL Draft Team Preview: New England Patriots

While M.I.A. has a point in her case and $16.6 million is a rather large sum to pay, what action did she expect from her actions? Surly she knew the television companies and NFL would take action against a blatant act of disrespect when people have been crushed publicly for less. Using the uncensored national stage to disrespect the person who is writing your check isn’t the best idea and if this were a normal nine-to-five job they would be fired. Welcome to the way the world works M.I.A.
