The latest NFL rumors have revealed that the Los Angeles Rams are interested in trading franchise tagged cornerback Trumaine Johnson. One of the teams linked with Johnson is the Cleveland Browns, owners of 11 draft picks this year and $100 million in cap space.
According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Rams have already discussed deals with multiple teams regarding Johnson. However, NFL rumors suggest that a possible deal is not imminent and the negotiations are in preliminary stages.
It comes as a surprise since the Rams put their franchise tag on Trumaine Johnson on Monday that made him the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL at $16.7 million. The two sides still have until July 15 to agree on a long-term extension.
However, Trumaine Johnson is coming off a down year wherein he only ranked 26th among cornerbacks last season, per Pro Football Focus. Nevertheless, he can still have a bounce back year next season as long as remains healthy.
NFL rumors now link the 27-year-old cornerback to the Cleveland Browns that was the worst team in the league last season. However, they have a lot of assets that include 11 draft picks this year that could be appealing to the Rams.
According to Sean Cordy of USA Today, the Browns are the favorites to land Johnson if the Rams officially trade him this offseason. He can form a great cornerback trio with Jamari Taylor and Joe Haden.
Trumaine Johnson also will have the chance to work with former Rams defensive coordinator Gregg Williams in Cleveland. He played his best under Williams from 2014 to 2015 before slumping this season in the Rams' first season in Los Angeles.
Other potential destinations for Trumaine Johnson beside the Browns include the Indianapolis Colts, Dallas Cowboys, Jacksonville Jaguars and New York Jets. However, these are just NFL rumors at the moment and should be taken with a grain of salt.
