Monday Night Football may not be just for the regular season anymore.
The Washington Post is reporting that while momentum is gathering for expansion of the NFL playoff field from 12 to 14 teams, starting in 2015.
One of the two extra playoff games could take place Monday night.
"The league currently seems to favor having two Saturday games, three Sunday games and one Monday night game on the opening weekend of the postseason if the change is implemented, according to a person with knowledge of the deliberations," the Post reported.
According to NFL.com, Commissioner Roger Goodell said having a playoff game take place on Monday night during Wild-Card Weekend could find opposition because of potential scheduling stumbling blocks in conducting the Divisional rounds of the playoffs.
Goodell said he doesn't think any changes would be made before the 2015 season.
The Post said that some owners and NFL executives believe expanding the playoff field will mean more television revenue.
Goodell himself is thought to be in favor of expanding.
"I do think the commissioner wants it," a person said, speaking on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized by the league to comment publicly on the internal deliberations. "I'm not exactly sure when it might get voted in. But if the commissioner wants it, I assume it'll happen at some point."
NFL owners will get together in Orlando, Fla., next month during the annual league meetings, to discuss playoff expansion. According to NFL.com, 24 of the 32 owners would need to approve the move for it to pass.
NFL.com reported that one person close to the situation said it is possible but "too soon to know for certain" that the competition committee will make a formal recommendation to the owners on playoff expansion at next month's meeting.
