In addition to worrying about keeping his own job, Knicks' head coach may be facing a situation in which Carmelo Anthony may leave the Big Apple if New York misses the postseson.
"It would sure make it a lot better if we're able to get into the playoffs," Woodson recently told ESPN Radio of the Knicks chances of resigning the league's second top scorer. "I think at the end of the day Melo will make the right decision. What that decision is going to be, I don't know. But I'd like to think that, being his coach, and being around him the last three years, that he'll stay in New York. That's where we want him to stay, that's where I would like to see him."
But hope and reality can often be two very different things. And with the Knicks 5.5 games out of the eighth and final Eastern Conference playoff berth, and 14 games under .500 overall, all bets are off as to what Anthony may actually decide to do.
Even though the Knicks can offer him nearly $30 million more than any other team, it's just as clear that all the losing is starting to way on Anthony and in the end no amount of money may be enough to compensate for it.
During All-Star weekend in New Orleans, Anthony went on record in asserting that he may be open to taking less money to stay in New York if he were convinced the Knicks would be willing to reinvest it in other players and improving the team.
But with the Knicks having lost three of their first four after the break, some are wondering how long that might remain his mindset.
