The New York Giants will allow veterans Hakeem Nicks and Justin Tuck to become free agents next month, according to ESPN.
Tuck, a defensive end, and Nicks, a wideout, were both main cogs on the 2011 Giants team that won the Super Bowl, but now it appears their days with the organization may be numbered.
Team GM Jerry Reese told ESPN on Saturday that management now prefers taking a wait-and-see approach in dealing with the two players.Tuck has spent the last nine seasons with the team, but turns 31 next month.
"Justin is going to go to the market and see what's out there for him," Reese told ESPN of the grizzled veteran who recorded a team-high 11 sacks last season. "Free agency means free agency. It means you go out and get as much as you can. I'm all for players getting as much as they can. Justin deserves to see what the market is. We'd love to have him back. We'll see where it goes."
ESPN reports Reese was less enthusiastic when talking about Nicks, who suffered through an injury-riddled, overall disappointing 56 catch, no touchdowns season last year.
Coming off a 7-9 season, the Giants have a lot of questions to answer and plenty of holes to fill. Having Nicks bolt this summer would only add to all the uncertainty.
