Less than 24 hours after being acquired from the Indiana Pacers Danny Granger is seeking a buyout from the Philadelphia 76ers and is rumored to have set his sights on the defending champion Miami Heat, Oklahoma City Thunder or San Antonio Spurs.
The Sixers obtained the veteran forward as part of Thursday's trade deadline deal with the Pacers that also sent Evan Turner to Indiana. In a matter of minutes, the 30-year-old Granger went from the team with the best record in the Eastern Conference to one of the NBA's overall worse squads.
"Granger's camp said to want buyout," tweeted ESPN's Mark Stein. "But he'd lose his Bird rights going that route. So lots to talk about in those "discussions." Later Stein tweeted "it's not automatic Granger will get buyout from Sixers. Keeping him for sign-and-trade options this summer holds appeal for Philly."
Stein later tweeted Philadelphia GM Sam Hinkie responded "there's a chance for us to have a discussion," when asked if the team planned to grant Granger's wishes.
Granger is owed a pro-rated share of his $13 million contract for the remainder of this season. The Heat, who recently created a roster spot by trading reserve guard Roger Mason Jr., would seem to have mutual interest in the former All-Star swingman,as it be in keeping with their plan to rest Dwyane Wade heading toward the playoffs.
