Amir Khan's skills in the ring are undeniable, but his most impressive trait may be his ability to block out loud criticism. In the face of mounting unhappiness that he's shaping up to be Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s next opponent this May, Khan is insisting he can solve Floyd's masterful defense. He has even released a video of his training camp in which he's shows just why he has a better chance than Marcos Maidana.
"Myself and my team have been getting constant calls and messages about my next fight since winning the Floyd Mayweather poll. Would like to thank all the fans who voted for me on the Floyd Mayweather poll, just waiting for him to announce the fight now," Khan said to Boxingscene.com.
Khan's not the only person who believes his style gives him an edge that Mayweather's recent slate of opponents didn't have. When asked about the Khan-Floyd pairing, respected trainer Freddie Roach said, "That's not an easy fight. I've always said Amir has the right style to beat Floyd if he fights correctly and doesn't stay in the pocket too long.
"I always thought he could beat him with his speed. I think he's faster than Mayweather and that's what it takes to beat him. Floyd might have his hands full on the night."
While many have argued other fighters, namely Danny Garcia, deserve the fight over Khan because they have better records, and victories, Khan advises fans and talking heads to dismiss those thoughts. Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer agrees with Khan.
"One thing that we know is that it seems like size and power is not really going to help to solve the Floyd Mayweather puzzle. So maybe the one thing that can solve it is speed and skill. I'm not going to say that Amir Khan's skills are better than Floyd Mayweather's skills, because I believe that Floyd is, maybe, the most skilled fighter of any generation and of all time. He's just the smartest guy in the ring," Schaefer said.
