Carmelo Anthony has set a new franchise and Madison Square Garden scoring record, hitting 62 points on 23 of 35 field goal shooting, including 6/11 from the three point area, as the Knicks defeated the Charlotte Bobcats 125-96 on Friday night. The 62 points scored by Anthony is also the highest point total this season.
"I made history tonight," Anthony said as quoted by ESPN.com. "It's only a small group of people that know what that zone feels like. Tonight, I was one of them."
Antony's scoring eruption broke the Knicks scoring record of 60 points set by Bernard King, and the 61 points scored by Kobe Bryant at Madison Square Garden in 2009.
His coach, Mike Woodson, was in awe. He told ESPN: "Tonight was one of those special nights for him. He got it going and everything he threw up was going in, man."
Anthony started the game like a house on fire, making eight of his first 10 attempts and scoring 20 points. By the end of the first half, he had scored 37 points including a buzzer beating three pointer from halfcourt. He also made his first five shots in the third quarter. At the 3:54 mark of that quarter, he broke his career high of 50 points with a lay-up. By that time, the MSG crowd was already serenading him with chants of "Melo, Melo."
Anthony said of the chants: "I haven't heard them like that since last year so it was good to get that feeling back here."
