Super Bowl XLVIII is almost three weeks away, and excitement is building up on which teams will headline what is arguably the most spectacular sporting event of the year. Similarly, a lot of anticipation is directed at the identity of entertainers who will perform at the game's halftime show.

While pop star Bruno Mars has been announced to headline the halftime show for the game scheduled on February 2 in New Jersey, the LA Times is also reporting that iconic rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers will join him for the said event.

According to the news outlet, Mars will announce on Saturday during the New Orleans Saint-Seattle Seahawks game that he has invited the group to appear at the big event. The same newspaper said that the band were already lined up to play a pre-Super Bowl bash in Brooklyn on Feb. 1, hosted by sports radio station WFAN-AM in New York.

An NFL spokesman referred a request for comment to Mars' spokeswoman, who declined to say whether the Red Hot Chili Peppers will be appearing with the singer.

In September last year, it was announced that Mars will headline this year's halftime show. According to the NFL, Super Bowl halftime shows are the most-watched live music concerts on TV. Previous performers have included Prince, Madonna, Justin Timberlake, Bruce Springsteen and U2. In 2013, Beyonce Knowles was the featured singer and her performance attracted more than 110 million viewers.

It is expected that the addition of the Red Hot Chili Peppers will attract more mature viewers and complement Mars' younger group of listeners.
