Danny Garcia is searching for an opponent to take on after dispatching knockout artist Lucas Matthysse in December, but is finding interesting opponents don't grow on trees. If he waits until the end of January, however, "Swift" may just have himself a worthy foe.
"Vicious" Victor Ortiz is set to make his return to the ring against Luis Collazo, and if he gets past this initial test believes he'll be right back in the title mix. A confident Ortiz had a stern warning for the entire welterweight and 154-lb. division as well-- 147 to 154, get out of my way."
When asked whether he'd like to face Garcia, Ortiz responded in the affirmative. "Absolutely, why not? I've known Danny for many years. He's a great fighter, but this is my time."
The last time boxing fans got to see Ortiz in the ring, he was reeling from a shocking knockout loss to then-unheralded Josesito Lopez, who broke Ortiz's jaw in June of 2012. That loss was preceded by an embarrassing episode against Floyd Mayweather.
"Money" clocked Ortiz as he attempted to hug and apologize to him for an illegal and intentional headbutt. Ortiz was whacked twice on the chin and could not rise for the ten-count, leaving fans in the building and at home unsatisfied. Ortiz has apparently put these setbacks behind him, and is talking a big game about his return.
Ortiz dismissed Lopez and Marcos Maidana, who forced him to quit during a 2009 fight, as "not in his league," crediting only Mayweather as a worthy adversary.
"I would like to go back and destroy them just for the sake of it. They're not on my level and never have been. Not Lopez, not Maidana. None of those guys, man. Mayweather is the only one where I could probably say, 'we are going to be in for a war.' Those other guys, they don't belong."
