Matt Stevens, one of the important members of the 2001 New England Patriots Super Bowl championship team, died last week at the age of 51. The Patriots announced the news on Thursday, March 28, in a tribute to the late former safety's contribution to the organization.
Stevens' NFL Run With Patriots and Other Teams
Stevens, a third-round selection in the 1996 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills, had an eight-year career in the league. He played for various teams throughout his career, including Washington, Philadelphia, Houston, and New England. Stevens was a steady figure on the field and made valuable contributions wherever he went.
In 2001 with the Patriots, Stevens appeared in 15 of 16 games and had 43 tackles, two passes defensed, one interception, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. CBS Sports reports that he was instrumental in the team's march to the Super Bowl, where he had six tackles and assisted the Patriots in winning their first championship.
An Impressive Collegiate Career at Appalachian State
Before his professional career, Stevens established himself at Appalachian State University as a two-time All-American safety. His exceptional performance in college paved his way into the NFL, where he proved to be a hard-hitting and astute defensive back.
Tragedy Hit After His Playing Days
Stevens' life changed drastically in 2007 when he suffered a devastating motorcycle accident, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down as a result of a spinal injury.
Essentially Sports reports that Stevens once said that he would not buy a motorcycle. However, he did not fulfill his promise and later bought a super bike. Unfortunately, this was the same thing that resulted in his spinal cord injury.
Though his situation was dire, Stevens showed huge strength. Thanks to the use of a wearable exoskeleton and custom-made leg braces, he regained partial mobility. His strength and grit in overcoming all this inspired a large number of people.
Stevens is survived by his mother, Jean Thillberg, father, Vincent Stevens, and brother, Mark Stevens. He is also survived by his two children, Cassidie and Colin Stevens, of Avon by the Sea, New Jersey. His extended family, including uncles, aunts, and cousins, will also miss him dearly.
Fans gave Stevens a tribute with "RIP" messages across social media platforms. Some missed his early days with Patriots and recalled his Super Bowl run with them.
